Learning how to clean corduroy shoes is a completely different process than one you would use on regular sneakers or shoes. The reason this process is unique, corduroy is considered a pile fabric, usually made of cotton with vertical cords, or ribs, that give it that unique appearance. The reason these types of shoes are so popular is because if you care for the material properly, these shoes can last a very long time. The corduroy shoes do not require cleaning frequently, but when they do, it is best to understand how to clean corduroy shoes properly.
If you allow the soil to remain on the shoes for long periods of time, the channels in between those cords will accumulate both grime and dirt. Once you clean these shoes properly, the channels and ribs will not longer show hair, dust, and other accumulated particles. Before cleaning your corduroy shoes, you will need a few items. To work most efficiently, you will need a soft brush, a dry towel, mild detergent, water, washcloth, dry towel, and a vacuum hose.
Before working with the shoes, make certain to thoroughly wash and dry your hands. With your clean hand, run it over the shoe in the direction that feels softer. The nap of the shoes will follow the direction of your hand, and once you location the right direction, make note because this will be the way you are going to brush the shoes after cleaning.
Now that you know the direction to brush, take your soft brush and gently move the nap in that direction to help remove any of the surface dirt. This will also help to raise the pile and make it easier to deep clean the shoes.
You can also use your vacuum hose to remove the outer layer of dirt off the shoes.
Remove the shoe laces from your corduroy shoes and wash them in a small bowl filled with detergent and warm water.
Fill a bowl with warm water, add a teaspoon of mild detergent, similar to Woolite, and still thoroughly to mix.
Dip a clean cloth into the cleaning solution, wring out the excess water, then begin to brush that washcloth over the surface of the corduroy shoes. It is very important you ring out the water because you never want to soak the shoes with water or you will damage that corduroy pile.
Once you have run that cloth with detergent over the surface of both shoes, repeat the process again until you see the shoes becoming clean. This might only take two or three passes to remove all the deep down contaminants inside the cords of the material. Be sure to move your cloth in the direction of the pile to get the best results.
Empty the bowl of cleaning solution don the sink, fill it now with only warm water. Take a new cloth and dip the end in the warm water, then wring out excess water from the cloth. Now take your clean cloth with warm water and begin to brush the exterior of the shoes. This process is going to easily remove any of the residue that was left behind from the cleaning solution step.
Empty the bowl of warm water and use a clean towel to blot dry the surface of the shoes to soak up any of the warm water left behind. You do not need to press to hard, the towel will draw up any water easily when it comes in contact with the shoe.
Place the shoes in a well ventilated area so that they can dry thoroughly. If you notice any link has accumulated on the shoes while drying, simply run a lint roller over them to clean.
Now that your corduroy shoes are clean, simply brushing them with the soft brush will restore their new-like appearance. If you would like to touch up your shoes during the day, purchase a new toothbrush and keep it with you. The fine fibers of the toothbrush are ideal for lifting the pile of the corduroy and making your shoes look amazing throughout your day.
