Grout is the substance that is used to fix tiles in place and keep them glued to the surface. It is visible as the space between two tiles. In most cases it is white in color although it can also have another color. If proper care and maintenance of grout is not observed, it might not protect the tiles that are in place since water may get in through any place where it has come off. One of the ways of maintaining it is by cleaning it carefully by using the right method. This is because even if the tiles are clean and the grout is neglected the room will look dull. It is therefore absolutely necessary to learn how to clean it and also the most effective and safe product to use since the stains that develop on it can sometimes be stubborn.
Many people opt using the home made cleaning solutions which are not only safe but also easy on the pocket. They have also been observed to be safer than the commercially produced cleaning solutions which can harm even the environment.
One just needs a few things in order to clean effectively. A washcloth, water, a simple or electric tooth brush and baking soda are all that is required to get you going. You simply need to mix the water with the baking soda to form a smooth paste. Once the paste is ready, you put it aside and first clean the tiles with a washcloth and water in order to have a better idea of the amount of dirt that is found in the grout. Once all the tiled area is free from loose dirt, take the water and baking soda paste and apply it with the tooth brush on the grout. Do not rinse off but let it sit there for a period of not less than ten minutes .Next, scrub the grout area with the toothbrush and once the dirt comes off, you just wipe the surface with a wet washcloth to prevent the dirt removed from sticking again.
In case you think that the grout is quite grimy, you can substitute the water with hydrogen peroxide when making the paste. You simply need to make a paste of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda and wait for this paste to stop bubbling. When the bubbling stops, all you need is to apply the paste on the grout and leave it there for 10-15 minutes. Follow the same procedure as above by wiping off the dirt after scrubbing it and lastly you rinse off with clean water.
Oxygen bleach is another effective solution that is considered t be safe to use since it is not toxic and it cannot harm the clothes or curtains in the shower. Use two to four spoonfuls of the oxybleach powder to mix with two cups of water. Apply it on the grout and let it stay for 15 minutes. After this time is over you do not need to scrub vigorously since it will have dissolved the stubborn stains.
