Aside from cleanliness, we all want our hardwood floors to be gleaming. Contrary to what most people believe, hardwood floors are about the easiest flooring material to clean. It isn’t really difficult to find the right materials to keep hardwood floors clean and shiny.
Follow these steps for the easiest and fastest way to clean hardwood floors:
- Make sure that all surface dirt and dust has been swept, dry mopped or vacuumed off the floor before you begin mopping. It is important to remove dirt and grit from wood floors as these are what cause a dull finish and scratches on most wood floors.
- Once this is done, begin mopping the floor. I find that using a solution of half a cup of white vinegar in a gallon of warm water to clean the floors very effective and cheap.
- Rinse and run the mop over the floor again.
There are several commercial hardwood floor cleaners available in stores. But the best cleaner would be a cleanser with a neutral Ph balance. Make sure that your hardwood floors are properly sealed before you use a damp mop on it. If there are worn out areas, do not use a damp mop as the moisture will cause the wood to warp. One other special floor cleaner that I find quite effective for especially dirty wood floors is Murphy’s Oil Soap. It is strong cleaner but quite safe to use.
Most hardwood floors are now finished with polyurethane or penetrating seals. These finishes make hardwood floors look shiny. However, if after you have mopped the floor with a damp mop you still find it looking dull, then you may apply wax or polish to add gloss to your wood floors.
Stains on floors cannot be avoided. On your hardwood floors, use a very fine steel wool to remove such stains. Alcohol may be used to remove stains on clean hardwood floors. Polish and buff the area after stain has been removed. If you have stubborn stains, the only option would be to sand down the stained portions.
A lot of people I know who have beautiful hardwood floors make sure that they remove their shoes before walking on their floors. Most have shoe-cabinets by their doors and change from their shoes into soft soled slippers first. This practice not only keeps the floors clean but it protects the floors from scratches.
Keeping your hardwood floors clean and shiny is not such a worrisome task if you do it regularly. In this manner, you don’t have grime and dirt gathering and thickening which will make it harder to remove.
